CCVC Review: Practicing Initial Consonant Clusters
- Reading Bulilit
- Beginning Readers
CCVC words begin with two consonants followed by a vowel and a final consonant, such as clap, frog, trip, and plug. Reviewing these words helps learners blend adjacent consonants while hearing each individual sound.
What Will We Learn Today?
By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:
identify the four phonemes in a CCVC word;
recognize common initial consonant clusters;
pronounce both sounds in an initial cluster;
blend phonemes to read CCVC words; and
read and spell CCVC words with different short-vowel sounds.
Fun Activities
1. Stretch and Blend
Say each phoneme slowly before blending the whole word.
Example: /f/ /r/ /ŏ/ /g/ → frog
2. Tap the Sounds
Ask learners to tap once for each sound they hear.
Example: clap → /k/ /l/ /ă/ /p/ → four taps
3. Build the Word
Use letter cards or magnetic letters to build CCVC words. Ask learners to say each sound before blending the whole word.
4. Change One Sound
Change one phoneme to create a new word.
Example: clap → clip → slip
5. Sort by Short-Vowel Sound
Ask learners to sort CCVC words according to their medial vowel sound: short a, e, i, o, or u.
Discussion
Review CCVC words according to their short-vowel sounds. Model how to pronounce both consonants in the initial cluster without inserting an extra vowel sound between them.

Conclusion
Regular CCVC practice helps learners read words with initial consonant clusters more confidently. Continue to model careful blending and remind learners to pronounce both consonant sounds in each cluster. Once learners can read individual words accurately, introduce CCVC words in phrases, sentences, and decodable texts.
