CCVC Review: Practicing Initial Consonant Clusters

CCVC words begin with two consonants followed by a vowel and a final consonant, such as clap, frog, trip, and plug. Reviewing these words helps learners blend adjacent consonants while hearing each individual sound.

Fun Activities

1. Stretch and Blend

Say each phoneme slowly before blending the whole word.

Example: /f/ /r/ /ŏ/ /g/ → frog

2. Tap the Sounds

Ask learners to tap once for each sound they hear.

Example: clap → /k/ /l/ /ă/ /p/ → four taps

3. Build the Word

Use letter cards or magnetic letters to build CCVC words. Ask learners to say each sound before blending the whole word.

4. Change One Sound

Change one phoneme to create a new word.

Example: clap → clip → slip

5. Sort by Short-Vowel Sound

Ask learners to sort CCVC words according to their medial vowel sound: short a, e, i, o, or u.
