CVCC Review: Practicing Final Consonant Clusters

CVCC words contain a consonant, a vowel, and two final consonants, such as hand, tent, milk, pond, and jump. Reviewing these words helps learners blend and segment words with final consonant clusters while recognizing the short-vowel sound.

Fun Activities

1. Stretch and Blend

Say each phoneme separately before blending the whole word.

Example: /h/ /ă/ /n/ /d/ → hand

2. Tap the Sounds

Ask learners to tap once for each sound they hear.

Example: tent → /t/ /ĕ/ /n/ /t/ → four taps

3. Build the Word

Use letter cards or magnetic letters to build CVCC words. Learners should point to each letter, say its sound, and blend the word.

4. Change One Sound

Change one phoneme to make a new word.

Example: hand → sand → send

5. Sort by Short-Vowel Sound

Ask learners to sort CVCC words according to their medial vowel sound: short a, e, i, o, or u.
